a term pertaining to the binding of two structures to each other. Homotypic (or homophilic) interactions are those involving binding between like structures. For proteins, this would mean binding of one protein to another protein of the same kind, i.e., the formation of homodimeric molecules. For cells this would mean preferential binding of one cell type to another cell of the same kind (see also: Simmons, 1993).
Many protein domains have a tendency to bind to the same protein domain present in other proteins, rather than binding to a completely different protein domain. With respect to this particular protein domain, this would be a case of homotypic interaction. With respect to the two different kinds of proteins, this would be a heterotypic
