These specialised cells cover the spiral limbus (limbus spiralis) of the cochlear duct with flattened, polygonal, plate-like processes. The name alludes to the perilymph-filled spaces between these cells that are known as the teeth of Huschke (Lim, 1970).
The function of these cells may be related to fluid and ion transport and ion homeostasis of endolymph especially in the early stages of development (Yamashita et al, 1992).
