These cells are named after their dark dense appearance in microscopic preparations. Macula densa cells are sensory epithelial cells found in the distal part of the renal tubular network (cortical thick ascending limb) in close association with the glomerulus, the filtering unit of the kidney.
Macula densa cells express osmoreceptors that allows them to sense and respond to changes in ionic content and fluid volumes in the tubule (Sipos et al, 2010) and also sense various chemical and metabolic signals (Peti-Peterdi J and Harris RC, 2010). Together with effector cells Macula densa cells form the juxtaglomerular apparatus. Macula densa cells provide physiologic feedback mechanisms through paracrine signals to adjacent contractile vascular smooth muscle and specialized endocrine-like cells
