[medullary neuron]
Medullary neurons is the name given to a type of interneurons intimately associated with the rostral migratory stream in the bulbar core in the adult rat olfactory bulb (Paredes and Larriva, 2010). These cells are found also in mouse, guinea pig, and hedgehog. They have a characteristic triangular or polygonal shape and are easily distinguished from adjacent cells by their large size and differentiated structure. The functional role of these cells remains to be determined. The authors have suggested that they may represent a cellular interface between endogenous olfactory activity and the differentiation of new neurons generated during adulthood.
