These pigmented cells are one of the cellular constituents of pigmented skin lesions. Usually they are located around or near vessels of the superficial dermis (Busam et al, 2001). The cells occur also in normal skin (Ohkuma, 1991). Melanophages represent macrophages that have ingested melanosomes or melanin (Weiss et al, 1988; James et al, 1987; Cooper et al, 1986). Fleming and Bergfeld (1990) have described an immunochemical technique for distinguishing melanocytes and melanophages in paraffin-embedded tissues.;
