This antimicrobial peptide of 7.2 kDa has been isolated from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) skin secretions (Fernandez et al, 2004).
The first 17 residues of oncorhyncin-2 are identical to residues 138-154 of histone H1 from rainbow trout. Oncorhyncin-2 most likely is a 69-residue C-terminal fragment of histone H1. For bioactive fragments of histone proteins see also: HDAPs [Histone-derived antimicrobial peptides].
Oncorhyncin-2 has minimal inhibitory concentrations in the submicromolar range against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria and shows negligible hemolytic activity towards trout erythrocytes.
