abbr. variously orf, ORF, ORFs. Open reading frames essentially constitute a stretch of nucleotides anywhere in the DNA that begins with a start codon (ATG, met) and is not interrupted by stop codons (TAA, TAG or TGA) and thus has the potential to encode a protein.
There are six ways of reading the nucleotide sequence of an unidentifed region of DNA (3 potential reading frames in each direction). Further analysis is required to find out which of the six frames actually encodes the protein expressed from the gene in question (see also: gene expression) if the reading frame gives rise to a protein or peptide
