Glossary of Neuropeptides |

This term has been proposed for a type of cell movement that is not governed primarily by chemotaxis or haptotaxis. Instead, each individual cell within a monolayer or a cell cohort has a tendency to migrate along the local orientation of the maximal normal stress, or equivalently, minimal shear stress. Plithotaxis requires force transmission across many cell-cell junctions (Trepat and Fredberg, 2011; Tambe et al, 2011). These forces govern collective cell migration (also: cohort cell migration) (Rørth, 2009), i.e., the migration behaviour of groups of cells that migrate as a whole, and, therefore, play a key role in physiological processes such as morphogenesis, wound healing, tissue regeneration, angiogenesis
