Macrophages that have taken up erythrocytes by phagocytosis have been termed erythrophagocytes or erythrophages. Such macrophages convert the hemoglobin iron into hemosiderin within 36-72 hours. These cells can have a prolonged life span (up to 8 weeks) and are usually referred to as siderophages or siderotic macrophages (Sherman et al, 1984; Epstein et al, 2001; Morselt et al, 1973). Heart failure cells are pulmonary iron-laden macrophages that have ingested erythrocytes leaked from the congested capillaries due to heart failure (Schoenmackers et al, 1979; Friedman-Mor et al, 1978).
