This protein is encoded in the genome of avian reovirus S1133 strain (Avian reovirus orf3 protein), which is associated with various disease conditions in poultry. The protein is a minor component of the outer capsid later of the virus that is synthesized in small amounts in infected cells. SigmaC functions as the cell attachment protein (Martinez-Costas et al, 1997).
The protein has been shown to induce cell death by apoptosis in both BHK cells and Vero cells. Deletion of the carboxyterminus of sigmaC protein abolishes the ability of the protein to cause cell death (Shih et al, 2004).
Mechanistically, SigmaC induces the expression of p53 and the pro-apoptotic protein BAX
