[Baby hamster kidney] This cell line, established from pooled kidneys of Syrian or Golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) in the early 60s has been used as one of the standard cell lines for many biochemical investigations including studies of vaccine production, cellular metabolism, Gene expression, Cell cycle, mutagenesis, and use of antisense RNA.
Many different sublines of the original cell line are available. BHK cells are used, among other things, for producing recombinant cytokines and other proteins.
Recombinant proteins produced in BHK cells usually undergo correct post-translational processing which may be required for full bioactivity of the factor when used as a pharmacological compound.
