The major protein constituting the Duffy blood group antigen (abbr. Dfy, FY) on erythrocytes is glycoprotein D (Duffy glycoprotein D). This antigen is also the major receptor for the parasite Plasmodium vivax, (Horuk et al, 1993; Tournamille, 2000). The approved gene symbol is ACKR1 [atypical chemokine receptor 1].
The gene encoding glycoprotein D has been cloned by Chaudhuri et al (1993), who reported also that mRNA encoding Duffy glycoprotein D is expressed in adult kidney, spleen, fetal liver, and in brain. Expression in Purkinje cells
