[Cell death protein 3] a gene from Caenorhabditis elegans encoding a nematode counterpart of murine IL1-beta Convertase. CED3 encodes a cysteine protease (see also: Caspases) that executes programmed cell death by cleaving critical protease targets (Xue et al, 1996).
CED3 has many different substrates (Taylor et al, 2007) and cooperates with engulfment genes (Hoeppner et al, 2001). Ultimately, CED3 is responsible for the destruction of worm cells in response to apoptotic signals, but it must first be activated by CED4. CED9, which inhibits programmed cell death
