[colony-forming unit in vitro] This term was coined at a time when a cell type resembling granulocytes was the only one that could be grown in semi-solid media (see: Colony formation assay) (Metcalf, 1981).
They are the same cell types described by other authors as CFU-GM. It was found subsequently that other cell types can be grown also in semi-solid culture media. CFU is now used as a general term to describe distinct populations of cells in the bone marrow termed progenitor cells, (see also: hematopoietic progenitor cells, hematopoietic stem cells, Hematopoiesis
