A heat-stable protein of 5 kDa found in resting human platelets where it complexes the bulk of unpolymerised actin (Safer et al, 1990). Fx is identical with thymosin-beta-4 (Safer et al, 1991).
Authentic thymosin-beta-4 is functionally equivalent to Fx, forming a 1:1 complex with actin monomers and inhibiting polymerization (Safer et al, 1991). The protein has been shown also to function as an actin monomer sequestering protein (Yu et al, 1993).
The widespread distribution and high intracellular concentration of thymosin-beta-4 suggests that it plays a significant role in regulating actin assembly in many cell types, for example, the morphological changes and
