Interferon-beta-2. IFN-beta-2 was isolated initially as a factor synthesized by human fibroblasts in response to IL1, TNF, PDGF or poly(I)poly(C) which also induce the synthesis of IFN-beta.
A weak antiviral activity was attributed to IFN-beta-2 but this was not confirmed in subsequent studies using pure recombinant factor (see also: Recombinant cytokines). IFN-beta-2 is identical with the 26 kDa protein and HPGF (hybridoma/plasmacytoma growth factor) and hence is identical with IL6.
