K17 (FSPQMLQDIIEKKTKIL) represents a stretch of 17 amino acids from a mouse gene that encodes a predicted protein of 37 amino acids. The sequence is similar to a subgroup of mouse beta-Defensins. K17 is an antimicrobial peptide with bactericidal activity against the Gram-negative bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. The peptide is not cytotoxic in cultures of mammalian cells or hemolytic in cultures of erythrocytes (Kawaguchi et al, 2010).
