The cDNA encoding M17 has been cloned by Fujiki et al (2003) from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). It encodes a protein of 215 amino acids (including a signal sequence of 33 amino acids). M17 is most similar to chicken CNTF and also shows similarity with cardiotrophin-1, oncostatin M, and LIF, all of which belong to the IL6 subfamily of cytokines. The protein is expressed in alginate-induced peritoneal cells. Some data suggest that expression of this putative cytokine is inducible by inflammatory stimulation.
Hanington and Belosevic (2007) have identified goldfish M17 (Carassius auratus L.).
