[maintenance factors]
a general operational definition for a protein the presence of which is required to prevent loss of identity, degeneration, cell atrophy, or cell death during development and also in adult life. These factors keep certain cell types or subsets thereof in a functional state. These factors act on undifferentiated stem cells but also on differentiated cell types.
Maintenance factors may or may not possess mitogenic activities (see: growth factors) or other activities. The terms survival factor, viability factor, or trophic factor are frequently used interchangeably.
Experimentally, the presence of one or more of these factors may obviate the need to use supporting feeder cell
