Ovodefensins
[ovodefensin]
This name has been given to a group of avian egg white proteins related to beta-Defensins (Gong et al, 2010). Members of this family include Gallin, Meleagrin, Cygnin, Duck BPS1, Duck BPS2, Taeniophygin-1, Taeniophygin-2, turtle egg-white protein. With the exception of gallin, the other members have not been shown to possess antimicrobial activities. It is, therefore, likely that the major biological function of ovodefensins is not antibacterial. For overview see also: Zhang and Sunkara (2014).
