Renotropin is a collective name for biochemically uncharacterized organ-specific substance(s) found in the serum and in urine (Areas et al, 1988; Memon et al, 1993; Snow et al, 1987). These substances mediate compensatory renal growth after partial nephrectomy. Renotropin may be more than a growth factor and is probably made up of an inhibitory as well as a stimulatory component. In addition, some data suggest that renotropin also possesses vasomotor and natriuretic properties. Renotropin does not appear to be identical with EGF, nor does it work by potentiating some activities of EGF.
The term is used also in a more generic sense to denote a factor or factors that are mitogenic, morphogenic, and/or anti-apoptotic for renal
