[serum-free medium] Such media are completely chemically defined culture media (CDM; chemically defined medium) that allow higher eukaryotic cells to be grown in the absence of serum (see also: Cell culture). Several such media are commercially available. Cell lines to be grown in such media usually have to be adapted to it to obtain sublines that show optimal growth and can be cultured indefinitely. In many instances long-term growth of cells in such media still pose some problems (Barnes et al, 1984; Even et al, 2006; Froud, 1999; Jayme, 1999; Lebkowski et al, 1995; Mather, 1998).
