Scythe is a protein of 150 kDa isolated by its ability to interact with reaper, a central regulator of apoptosis in Drosophila melanogaster that induces rapid mitochondrial cytochrome C release, activation of caspases, and nuclear fragmentation as seen during apoptosis in Xenopus laevis oocyte extracts (Thress et al, 1998; see also: mitochondrial apoptosis). Sequence comparisons show that the protein is identical with BAT3. Another designation for scythe is BAG6 [BCL2-associated athanogene-6].
The protein is highly conserved among vertebrates and contains a ubiquitin-like domain near its N-terminus.
