A generic name given to some biochemically biochemically uncharacterized soluble factors secreted either 6-48 hours or later (3-4 days) by cells stimulated with mitogens or antigens. These factors suppress immune responses usually antigen-unspecifically. Some factors also inhibit the proliferation of normal and neoplastic cell types.
Suppressive human factors have been grouped into four categories: primarily stimulatory lymphokines that also mediate certain suppressive activities, suppressive lymphokines produced during altered states of immunity, suppressive lymphokines produced by exogenously stimulated lymphocytes, and suppressive lymphokines produced by unstimulated
