A murine plasmacytoma cell line established from ascites tumors of BALB/cAnPt mice. Growth of the cells depends on IL6, which was detected originally as PCT-GF (plasmacytoma growth factor) secreted by murine P388D1 cells (derived from macrophages). The cells are used, therefore, to assay this factor in bioassays (Nordan and Potter, 1986). The cells die of apoptosis when starved of IL6 (Romanova et al, 1996).
