[transforming growth factor] Transforming growth factors were identified initially as proteins secreted by virus-transformed mouse cells (see: SGF, sarcoma growth factors). These factors were found to induce a reversible transformed phenotype in suitable non-neoplastic fibroblastic indicator cell lines in vitro. This phenotype was operationally characterized by a loss of density-dependent growth, i.e., overgrowth of cells, in monolayer cultures (see also: Cell culture), characteristic changes in cellular morphology, and the ability of the cells to grow as non-adherent cell colonies in soft agar (see also: Colony formation assay).
