The v-abl oncogene is found in the genome of the acutely transforming replication-defective retrovirus, Abelson murine leukemia virus (Ab-MuLV). The viral gene is a homolog of the cellular c-abl. The cellular gene is located on human chromosome 9q34.1. It is a member of the tyrosine kinase protein family. Its biological functions are still unknown but amino acid sequences of proteins from various species are highly conserved.
The protein encoded by cellular abl has been shown to bind to specific DNA sequences in the nucleus and to possess the unique function of binding to actin filaments in the cytoplasm. c-abl
