This term refers to the size of erythrocytes. Normally sized erythrocytes are also being referred to as normocytes. Macrocytes are larger and microcytes are smaller than normally sized cells. For shape variants see poikilocytes (irregularly-shaped cells) and spherocytes (globular cells). See also: discocytes.
Variably sized red blood cells are observed in a variety of disease states, including anemias, thalassemias, iron deficiency and can be of diagnostic value (Simel et al, 1988).
