This is a general term for abnormally (irregularly) shaped erythrocytes (see also: discocytes) (Ward, 1979). As such this term comprises artifactual changes (e. g., crenation; see also: crenocytes, echinocytes) and a number of true abnormalities (spherocytes, acanthocytes, schistocytes, leptocytes). The presence of such cell in noticeable numbers (poikilocytosis) may indicate certain types of diseases or conditions (Ward, 1979; Hyodo et al, 1995).
