a hybrid term derived from necrosis and apoptosis. The term pertains to the incomplete execution of the internal apoptotic pathway and the following degeneration of affected cells by necrosis (Formigli et al, 2000). The authors have concluded apoptosis and necrosis may represent only two extremes of a continuum of intermediate forms of cell death and that aponecrosis represents the more typical tissue and cell response to damaging stimuli (Formigli et al, 2004).
