Cholangiocytes are epithelial cells that line the intrahepatic bile ducts. They are variously referred to as bile duct cells, bile duct epithelial cells, bile ductular cells, bile epithelial cells, biliary epithelial cells, intrahepatic biliary epithelial cells (abbr. HIBECs for human cells).
Cholangiocytes differentiate from undifferentiated hepatoblasts that also give rise to mature hepatocytes. The common precursor cell that expresses markers common to cholangiocytes and hepatoctes is being referred to also as LPC [
