[chondroclast]
Chondroclasts are cells that destroy and resorb cartilage (Knese, 1972; Savostin-Asling and Asling, 1975; Takuma, 1962) (see also: mineraloclasts). Based on morphological and histochemical findings, they are usually taken to be the same as osteoclasts, which resorb bone and calcified cartilage. Nordahl et al (1998) have characterized cells involved in resorption during endochondral bone formation. They have reported that chondroclasts involved in cartilage breakdown at the epiphyseal/metaphyseal border share characteristics of bone/cartilage-resorbing osteoclasts at the metaphyseal/diaphyseal border in terms of ultrastructural features and functional activity but differ from osteoclasts, not only with respect to location but possibly also by mode of action.
