this is general term pertaining to all cell types that are committed to become red blood cells (erythrocytes) (see also: erythroblasts, erythroid progenitor cells). Depending upon context, the term is used to refer to mature erythrocytes also even trhough mature erythrocytes are no longer nucleated cells.
