Circulating fibrocytes are a distinct population of leukocytes with characteristics of fibroblasts (Chesney and Bucala, 1997; Metz, 2003). The cells display a unique phenotype, expressing fibroblast collagen type 1, collagen type 3, the leukocyte common antigen CD45RO, the pan-myeloid antigen CD13, the hematopoietic stem cell antigen CD34, the costimulatory molecules CD80 and CD86, MHC class 2 molecules, and adhesion molecules CD11b, CD54, and CD58 (Chesney et al, 1997; Grab et al, 1999).
