The Drosophila melanogaster gene hippo (abbr. hpo; gene CG11228) encodes a protein kinase most related to mammalian MST1 (not identical with HGF-like protein but identical with serine/threonine protein kinase 4; STK4) and MST2. Mutations of hippo cause increased tissue growth and impaired cell death by apoptosis. Cells with a mutated hippo gene express elevated levels of the cell cycle regulator cyclin E and the apoptosis inhibitor DIAP1.
