[intrabody]
antibodies encoded by genetically engineered genes that have been manipulated so that the antigen binding domain is expressed intracellularly. These intrabodies display the specific and high-affinity binding properties of normal antibodies and can be expressed stably in precise intracellular locations inside mammalian cells. Internally expressed antibodies can be used to complex important intracellular target molecules (signaling molecules, oncogenes, intracellular receptors) and thus to interfere with biological processes such as early and late events of viral life cycles or cancer development.
Intrabodies is can be directed to a specific target antigen present in various subcellular locations including the cytosol, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, peroxisomes, plasma
