Insulin growth factor-like family member 3 |
||
General term for factors inducing the formation of the mesoderm of amphibian embryos such as Xenopus laevis. Mesoderm formation involves the interaction of cells of the vegetal hemisphere of the embryo with overlying equatorial and animal pole cells. Members of the TGF-beta, FGF (fibroblast growth factors), and Wnt family of proteins have been shown to possess mesoderm inducing activity. Note that none of these factors induces mesoderm alone, but that they also induce endoderm and neural tissues (Lopashov and Zemchikhina, 1997; Smith, 1993, 1995).
