[nerve sheath cell]
In the peripheral nervous system, sheath cells are Schwann cells that provide the myelin sheath for neurons. In the central nervous system sheath cells are oligodendrocytes. In white matter, these cells form the myelin sheaths that are around many axons. In gray matter these cells may lightly myelinate some dendrites. Collectively, these cells are also referred to as myelin sheath cells.
The collective term peripheral nerve sheath cells is used often to refer to Schwann cells and perineurial cells surrounding peripheral nerves.
