[acanthocyte]
Acanthocytes, called also prickle cells or spiny prickle cells, are abnormally shaped erythrocytes (see also: discocytes). They are ring-shaped forms characterized by the presence of 2-10 fingerlike cytoplasmic projections of varying sizes (Köhler et al, 1991; Heine et al, 2003). Some of these cells may show also features of stomatocytes. The nature of the membrane dysfunction is poorly understood.
Alterations in cell shape observed in acanthocytes result in reduced membrane fluidity. These changes can be caused by abnormal plasma cholesterol to phospholipids rations and the accumulation of lipids within the membrane Thus, the presence of acanthocytes may reflect diseases related to abnormal lipid metabolism. erythrocytes
