The term describes a specific shape form of erythrocytes that deviates from the standard form (see also: discocytes) and is characterized by invaginations of the cell membrane that give the cells a cup-shaped appearance (hence called also cup cells). Some histologists refer to these cells also as hydrocytes. Some of these cells may show also features of acanthocytes.
Changes observed in stomatocytes can be induced in a reversible manner by low pH values in the external medium (Gedde and Huestis, 1997). A variety of agents and conditions have been shown to induce formation of stomatocytes, including adriamycin (Suwalsky et al, 1999; Jay, 1975), albumin
