This term refers collectively to the totipotent stem cells, which give rise to all cell types found in the blood (see also: hematopoiesis). These stem cells are called also hematopoietic stem cells. Depending upon the way they are identified, these stem cells are variously referred to as CFC-bast, CAFC, CFU-A, CFU-S, CRU, HPP-CFC, LTC-IC, LTRC.
