this general term refers to larger precursor proteins from which single or multiple bioactive peptide hormones and/or regulatory peptides are released by limited proteolytic cleavage (for more general terms see also: proprotein and preproprotein in entry gene expression). The liberation of the bioactive factor(s) may include processing by endoproteases, exoproteases, and also additional steps such as amino acid derivatisations during prosttranslational processing. The nature of these steps and also of the generated bioactive products may be different in different cell types (for general overview see: Goetze et al, 2012).
