abbr. PRP (a term with multiple meanings). Protector protein has been purified from human erythrocytes by Lim et al (1994). It is athiol-specific antioxidant protein. The human protein completely inhibits visible absorption spectral changes of oxyhemoglobin, DNA cleavage, and the peroxidation of red blood cell membrane by a nonenzymatic Fe3+/O2/thiol mixed-function oxidation system capable of generating hydroxyl radical.
Sequence analysis of the cloned gene shows that this protein is the same as TSA [thiol-specific antioxidant protein], which has been shown to be identical with Peroxiredoxin-2 and constitutes one subunit (NKEF-B) of the dimeric protein NKEF [
