abbr. and approved gene symbol: RPL7. The human gene for this subunit of the 60S ribosome (60S ribosomal protein L7) has been cloned and characterized by Hemmerich et al (1993).
L7 is a ribosomal protein involved in translational control in eukaryotic cells. L7 appears to have secondary functions independent of its involvement in protein biosynthesis.
Neumann et al (1995) have suggested a regulatory role of protein L7 in eukaryotic translation, showing that it inhibits cell-free translation in reticulocyte lysates and affects the expression of nuclear proteins upon stable transfection into Jurkat T-lymphoma cells.
