reticulocytes

This term has been used in several different ways.

_____________________________________________________________________________

(-1-)

The name derives from the observation that these cells contain reticular networks of polyribosomes. As reticulocytes loose their polyribosomes they become mature erythrocytes (see also: erythropoiesis). Reticulocytes represent the last stage of a series of developmental stages in the bone marrow before the cells are being released into blood. Red blood cells released from the bone marrow into the peripheral circulation are considered reticulocytes for about 2 days.

For related information see also: Cell types, Cell lines in Cytokine Research, Cell culture. For other entries pertaining to hematopoiesis see also the Hematology Dictionary section of this encyclopedia.
