[self-renewing cell]
This general term usually refers to various types of undifferentiated stem cells or stem-like cells that have the capacity for asymmetric divisions during the cell cycle that gives rise to one daughter cell retaining full stem cell characteristics and another daughter cell that undergoes further cell differentiation and may be restricted in its developmental potential. This general term also comprises cancer stem cells that differ from normal stem cells in the deregulation of the mechanisms that normally control stem cell physiology (see also: self-renewal, stemness).
