This antigen has been identified as a type II transmembrane-glycoprotein (29-33 kDa) expressed on terminally differentiated human B-cells (Goto et al, 1994). The corresponding antibody detects human multiple myeloma cell lines, primary myeloma cells and normal plasma cells. No cells expressing HM1.24 are found in the peripheral blood, liver, spleen, kidney, or heart of normal individuals (Goto et al, 1994).
Ohtomo et al (1999) have cloned the HM1.24 gene. The encoded protein is identical with bone marrow stromal protein BST-2.
