[hepatocyte stimulator peptide] HSP is a protein of 17.5 kDa isolated from human fetal liver. HSP strongly stimulates the growth of hepatocytes and initiates DNA synthesis in vitro.
HSP is not a heparin binding growth factor (see also: HBGF) and its biological activity is not potentiated by heparin.
A study of serum HSP and TNF in patients with fulminant hepatic failure suggests that patients with higher HSP/TNF ratios have a better prognosis than those with lower ratios.
