a homodimeric protein (34 kDa subunit; 314 amino acids, including 24 amino acids of signal sequence) that is mitogenic for primary rat hepatocytes and the synthesis of which is upregulated in the regenerating rat liver after partial hepatectomy. The protein is produced by parenchymal hepatocytes but not by endothelial cells and acts through an autocrine mechanism (Hara et al, 2000).
Yamamoto et al (1993) have cloned the cDNA and called it HFREP1 [hepatocyte-derived fibrinogen-related protein 1]. The protein shows significant sequence homology with fibrinogen. The approved gene symbol is FGL1 [
