The term Magentosis has been suggested to describe a form of cell death said to be distinct from apoptosis, necrosis, or oncosis (Umemura et al, 1996). It is characterized by pale and homogeneous-looking nuclei of diastase-resistant periodic acid-Schiff-reactive degenerative acinar cells selectively seen in an early regression stage of the human lactating breast. Nuclei contain single-stranded DNA stretches or breaks that react positively in a TUNEL assay.
